How to Obtain Your Learner Driver's Permit and what's the cost?

 

• Step 1: Call the Barbados Licensing Authority (BLA) at 536-0270 to set your appointment to sit the written Regulation test. Some form of Barbados Identification is required. Take note of the date and time given to you. Go to any Barbados Revenue Authority (BRA) office prior to your regulation test date and pay the fee of $30bds to sit the test. Please ensure you have some form of BarbadosIdentification.

• Step 2: Sit regulation test. The test usually consists of 20 questions. Answer 15 or above correctly and you are on your way to obtaining your driver's permit. If you are unsuccessful, you can apply to re-sit the test. However, a fee of $30bds is charged for each test attempt.

 

• Step 3: Once you've successfully passed the test, head downstairs into the main office where you will be given a form to fill. You will be required to present your Barbados ID and two passport sized photos. On completion, take the documentation provided by the BLA official over to BRA and pay the fee in the amount of $80bds to receive the Driver's Learner permit.

 

• Step 4: Return to the BLA's Main Office to obtain a date for your driving test. Once issued, that's it!!!

What are the categories of Learner driver permits for beginners?

 

Heavy Goods = Truck. (Must be 18yrs)

Light Goods = Automatic/Manual.

Private Car = Automatic or Manual. 

 

What's the cost to renew my permit?

 

If you're renewing at the end of a six (6) month period the cost is $35bds and the permit will be valid for three (3) months. If renewing at the end of a three (3) month period the cost will be $60bds and the permit will be valid for six (6) months.

 

How do I apply for a lost permit?

 

Take your  Barbados Identification card to the Barbados Licensing Authority’s office located in the Pine, St. Michael to apply for the lost permit. After receiving the neccessary paperwork you can pay the associated fee at any BRA office. 

 

How long does it take to prepare for my driving test? 

 

This depends on the individual, however you must be in possession of a valid  driver’s permit for a period of three (3) months before taking the driving test.

 

How often should I practice?

 

We suggest at least two (2) hours per week. However, the more practice you're able to get in, the  likelihood of becoming more competent in driving proficiency is greatly increased. 

 

How many lessons do I need to properly prepare for the driving test?

 

We recommend  20 to 30 hours.

 

How do I secure a date for my driving test and what is the associated fee?

 

In order to receive a date for a driving test please present a valid driver’s permit to the BLA office. You will also be required to make a payment of $100bds to any BRA office. 

 

N.B. It is recommended that the payment be made before the date of your driving test.

 

How do I upgrade  my license?

 

Applications for license upgrades are done at the BLA office.  After receiving the neccessary paperwork a payment of $80bds can be made at any BRA office after which your permit will be issued. 

 

What happens if my license has expired for more than three (3) years?

 

Please visit the offices of the BLA and you will be directed to the appropriate personnel. After an assessment is completed you will be notified if you are required to take the driving test again or otherwise. 

 

What happens if my license is lost or stolen?

 

Apply for a police report within your district. After the report has been obtained, please take it in to the BLA office. 

 

I'm a Barbarian and I got my license overseas can I get a Barbados license?

 

Yes. Please present your existing license to the BLA along with some form of Barbados identification. 

 

N.B. The possibility exists that you may be asked to take a driving test.

 

Can a Non-National apply for a Learner's  permit?

 

Yes. However, only if the following circumstances are true:

 

• You are in possession of a valid work permit

• You are in possession of a valid student visa
